The New England Farmhouse
Although it was not my original intent to create a true farmhouse, the idea of adding an expansive porch to our Granby Colonial design was an intriguing one. There is a very narrow architectural margin inside of which I design and so I was conflicted with this project at first. However, by paying particular attention to the exterior detailing and scale of the structure with its important architectural elements, I was able to create a new house which would contribute, not detract from our other offerings. It is slightly off page with our main design focus but holds merit just the same.
On the first floor of the main house the living space is loosely defined and open fostering group interaction from space to space. The front entry foyer leads left into a formal dining room. To the right a spacious living room with fireplace flows into a large open kitchen and breakfast area with cooking fireplace. An impressive covered porch begins outside the living room, continues across the front of the main house and terminates just off the kitchen’s connected sun porch. An abundance of light enters though several glass doors to the sides and rear, helping the home connect with its natural surroundings. A heated mudroom connector contains the laundry area, storage and a half bath that services the first floor. With farmer’s porches off both sides providing covered entry into either side, the connector also leads to the two bay carriage shed. The second floor is accessed by way of a U-shaped stair and contains a gracious master bedroom suite with two separate walk-in closets and a comfortable master bath with whirlpool tub and separate shower. Three other large bedrooms, a shared full bathroom and staircase to the third level accompany the master suite. Optional living space for immediate or future expansion can be found on the third floor of the main house as well as the room above the carriage shed. The third floor is suitable for two comfortable bedrooms and a bath. The second floor of the carriage shed could be used for simple storage, an office, or an exercise room.
The second floor contains two sizable bedrooms with full closets. They share a full bath and additional hallway storage. At the top of the stairs is a common loft area with skylights, providing space for a small office with reading chair and desk. In addition, there is optional living space available on the second floor above the garage which is connected to the home by way of the heated mudroom hallway. This space is often developed into a private office, exercise area, art studio or additional bedroom.
