The Putney Farmhouse
This particular design was first developed to create a typical Vermont farmhouse, which would have originally been built in the mid 19th century. The asymmetrical front façade, wide frieze board at the eave and 10/12 roof pitch and 6/6 windows are several important design details that are indicative of the architectural style presented here.
The first floor begins inside the entry hallway leading left to a large living room with fireplace. Built-in bookcases flank interior glass doors which open into a separate formal dining room. Continuing from the dining room is an expansive open kitchen and gathering room with woodstove. Off of the gathering room is an informal mud room entryway with half bath and ample closet storage. Doors from this area lead out onto a large wrap-around porch and back to the two bay carriage shed. A rear staircase offers access to the large open space above the carriage shed.
The second floor of this home has a master suite with a large walk-in closet and master bath, all situated above the main house. The top level of the two storie ell offers a comfortable area for two other bedrooms, serviced by a second full bath. The laundry is also located on this level. The space above the garage provides for additional storage or might be used as living or study space.
The second floor contains two sizable bedrooms with full closets. They share a full bath and additional hallway storage. At the top of the stairs is a common loft area with skylights, providing space for a small office with reading chair and desk. In addition, there is optional living space available on the second floor above the garage which is connected to the home by way of the heated mudroom hallway. This space is often developed into a private office, exercise area, art studio or additional bedroom.
